First of all, I want to mention that I am not a golf coach or golf professional. I have simply been around the game quite a few years as an interested father of a junior golfer. My views in this article come from watching my son take several golf lessons, as well as watching my son on the practice range and on the course.
How do you lower your score? Should you concentrate on hitting your driver further? Maybe you should work on smacking that three wood forty yards further than the next guy? Nope.
If I was a golf coach, I would hammer in the wedge game. I would tell my students to go buy some cheap practice balls at a sporting good store, and spend hours and hours at a practice range, hitting your chip shots to the green. Go hit 100 balls, go pick them up, hit them again. Hit them from different distances, from different angles, etc... My feeling is you can never hit enough wedge shots.
After you just can't hit any more short chip shots (100 yards and in), now it's time to practice your bunker shots. Throw that big pile of balls in the sand, and go for it. After 15-20 minutes of bunker shots, I will tell my student to work on the green. Spend at least 20 minutes on the practice green.
After all of this is completed, I would move over to the range. Start working on your irons. Never hit a shot without picking a spot. Don't hit the same club more than twice in a row. After all, how many times on the course do you only hit one club? Right..never!
After spending about 80% of your total practice time on your short game and long irons, only then would I pull out the woods. Once again, pick a spot that you need to hit.
It is my feeling if you practice 2 hours a day, with 80% of your practice time, concentrated on the short game, your game will improve in now time.
How much time should you practice vs playing rounds. My feeling is your junior player should play a lot. Many kids (in the summer) will play 27 holes per day. Get your junior golfer out on the course. The more they play, the better they will become. I would mix up practice days on the range between the playing rounds.
I hope this information helps.
I have found this website to be a great source of information. I highly recommend checking it out.
