Fuel Conservation Measures of IATA for Cheap Air Tickets

The airlines strategies for offering cheap air tickets to customers hover around cutting down on fuel consumption as well as to increase the efficiency of utilisation of fuel. To meet this end, even IATA has fuel conservation programs with their own set targets for increasing the fuel conservation. These programs are:
1. Save 1 minute: This is an initiative of IATA which aims to save one minute of flight time per flight. It has been estimated that the airlines around the world spend about $100 per minute during the flight towards the operating expenses including fuel, labour and other operating costs. By saving one minute per flight, the savings of fuel for the year for all airlines is likely to be in region of $1 billion per year. But, how is this to be achieved? IATA program focuses on better procedures and management, improved airspace design and participation of airlines, navigation service providers, traffic controllers (ATCs) and other stakeholders.
2. Route optimization: This has been another key area for fuel conservation. By opening more direct flights between the different destinations and by re-routing some others currently being operated, it is possible to effect a saving of another $1 billion in a year. Half of this target has already been achieved using the route optimization methods outlined by IATA. With many world markets still doing more on route optimization, it is possible to achieve this target sooner than later, making it possible for International flights to become cheaper.
3. Improvement in Airport Traffic flows: Another significant measure contributing to fuel conservation is the airport traffic flow. The charges levied at the airport can be reduced if there is an improvement in the airport traffic flows. It has been estimated that globally, this can lead to savings of about $500 million annually. The main emphasis of this programs is towards the rationalization of arrivals and departures, ground handling and of Noise abatement departure procedures.
IATA has been striving to usher in best practices and procedures which could lead to greater operational efficiencies and better management of the flights operations. This is being done with the aim of meeting the environmental, safety, security and many other concerns. It has made far reaching impact on the operational, administrative and regulatory procedures and practices of the airlines globally. Its efforts have led to working arrangements with the governments and other agencies for meeting its objectives and goals. The cheap air tickets on the international flights have largely been due to the efforts of IATA towards making global air travel simpler and hassle-free for the passengers. Its efforts in fuel conservation are in tune with its larger objectives.
