The Mage class has some distinct advantages for leveling when compared with other classes. Each class has their advantages and disadvantages but the Mage is great for leveling because they have the ability to make their own food and water, teleport between continents and also possess the ability to blink which heavily reduces running time.
When it comes to the best leveling build for the Mage it's a close call, with some enthusiasts and experts claiming that the Frost build is most effective for leveling due to its mana efficiency.
I would personally opt for the Acrane build as you can take down the enemies a lot faster and the Arcane tree will provide you with mana regeneration and other really cool talents.
Mage Leveling Build For The Arcane Talent Tree
The Arcane Mage talent build offers the best DPS spec and is suitable for novice players looking to level through the game fast. Firstly you'll definitely want to max out Netherwind presence and improve your spell haste by 3%.
Improved Arcane Missiles is a must here, especially if following the Glyths as well. Improved Arcane Missiles will increase the number of missiles fired by your Arcane Missile by 2. Then you're definitely going to want to take the Missile Barrage ability as this will allow you to fire your Arcane Missiles once every 0.5 seconds.
A little further down the talent tree at level 57 you're going to want to backtrack and assign 3 talent points to Torment the Weak which was purposely skipped earlier, then assign 2 points to Improved Mana Gem and finally you can pick up the Arcane Blast.. Sweet.
This particular build possesses an advantage with mana preserving due to the fact that regeneration carries on while casting. It's amazing the critical hits you will get with this build which as a result will refund 30% of the cost of the spell.
This build also offers +10% spirit and +15% intellect. Arcane Concentration allows roughly 10% of the spells you cast to be cost free.
AoE spells like Dragon Breath and Blast Wave wont be obtained with this build but instead focuses on Fireballs, Pyroblasts and Fire Blasts. The Arcane Explosion gets boosted so that would definitely make a decent choice for AoE purposes.
Two great abilities can be found in Presence of Mind and Arcane Power, these two abilities can give you that high burst damage for whenever required.
Mage Leveling Build For The Frost Talent Tree
Another option to consider for this Mage leveling guide would be to go full frost but this wont be as efficient for leveling quickly as the build discussed above, especially for the first 30 levels of the game. Also the damage output of Full frost isn't as high as the Arcane build.
Although frost is probably the better build for PvP, with a decent amount of damage and decent survivability and control. So if you're on a PvP server then the frost option may be considered, otherwise go with the Arcane/ Fire noted above.
When going for the Frost build I would assign 2 talent points to Early Frost and 3 points to Piercing Ice and move down from there. Although you will be taking the Shatter ability next, for now I would take Improved Cone of Cold instead and then you can assign your next 2 talent points on Shatter.
The talent build is straight forward as nearly all the talent points are assigned in this talent tree. Just 3 talent points are kept back and spent on the Netherwind Presence ability which is going to increase your spell haste by 3%. The only talent I opted not to have in this build is Piercing Chill as this is will have little if any positive effect on leveling up quickly.
