Tips For Saving Money On Airfare

Flying these days can be quite expensive, but there are many different ways that you can save your self a few bucks along the way. Here are a few little tips for keeping some extra change in your pocket.
Shop Around
Do not assume that all travel agents and all aggregate flight search engines will be charging the same prices. Sometimes there can be huge differences as well as special deals that one particular travel agent will be having. I know it can be tempting to pull the trigger as soon as you see a holiday you want, but it's worthwhile to take the extra time to shop around for the best price. You can also at times play one travel agent off another if you explain that you were able to find a lower price elsewhere. It's always worth a try, anyway.
Check Airline Websites
Many airlines will actually offer cheaper deals if you go to them directly rather than through a travel agent. Also many of the airlines' special deals are not listed on price comparison sites. A comparison site can give you a good idea of who flys the route and it can also give you a ballpark figure when it comes to price, but when it comes to actually booking the ticket, go to the airline directly.
Try to be flexible
If your holiday date is not set in stone then being flexible can save you huge amounts of money, sometimes in the hundreds. For example on a recent trip to Spain, I found a ticket that was 50% cheaper in September than it was in August. Be mindful of when the high and low season is for your destination and try to plan your trip when there will be less visitors as everything from flights to accommodation will be more affordable.
Check For Weekend And Early Morning Deals
For a reason only known to airlines themselves, they like to have crazy deals on weekends and early mornings. Perhaps it's because they find themselves with more available seats on these flights and they are trying to fill them at the last minute. For example, a flight to New York may be nearly half the price at 8am than what it was the previous evening. The thing with these crazy deals is that they only seem to last a few hours, so you have to pay attention and act quickly.
Check Hotel & Air Packages
There are instances where an air and hotel package can actually end up being cheaper than the flight by itself. You can look for deals like these by scanning many of the aggregate travel sites or by checking in with airlines and hotels directly and asking them if there are any promotional offers that include both accommodation and a flight.
Plane tickets will never be the cheapest component of your budget, but there are many steps you can take to minimize their cost. Hopefully the tips above help make them more affordable so you have more money to spend on other aspects of your holiday.
